Did you know at age five what you wanted to be when you grew up? Well, neither did Dawson, but it turns out he was practicing for a career in voice over at that early age. Still learning to read, the would-be voice actor was riding through town with his mother when they passed a 7-Up billboard. “Seven Yoop!” Dawson pointed proudly at the sign as he read aloud. His loving mother eventually stopped laughing and making fun of him for that and he continued reading signs and billboards in the voices of the announcers on tv.
Growing up, Dawson fell in love with the most colorful of entertainers: The Muppets, David Copperfield, and KISS all created worlds of illusion to which we could escape, and he studied them. The young McKay read and re-read the Chronicles of Narnia. These brands of storytelling shaped the artist he would become.
Over the years, he searched for his ideal creative outlet, working professionally in magic, puppetry, radio, cartooning, sound design, video production, and acting. Finally finding his home in professional voice over, Dawson was afforded the opportunity to play everything from rock star to puppet to guy-next-door. Finding performing in front of a live audience an incredible rush, Dawson still loves when the curtain goes up and the lights go on in his studio and it's time to bring to life ... your story.
And, yes, he still practices by reading signs and billboards aloud.
